CLEVELAND – Western Michigan’s Julia Champion has been named Mid-American Conference Co-Golfer of the Week after winning the 2016 Rocket Classic on Tuesday.
Champion earned the first individual win by a Bronco since 2014 after shooting a 54-hole total of 218 (+2) and finished two strokes ahead of the competition. The Markham, Ontario, native recorded back-to-back 73’s in the first two rounds on Monday at the Catawba Island Golf Club. She entered the final round on Tuesday with a two-stroke lead and maintained it after shooting an even-par 72.
The junior finished the tournament tied for fifth in pars with 35 and tied for second in birdies with nine. Champion’s total helped WMU finish in second place with a combined score of 917 (+54)
The golf team is off this week and is in action next on Monday, Oct. 24 at the Silver Lake Shootout in Silver Lake, Ohio.
CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. — Western Michigan golf’s Julia Champion, Anna Wilcoxson and Kaitlyn Watkins have earned Women’s Golf Coaches Association Collegiate Golf All-American Scholars for the 2015-16 season.
The WGCA All-American Scholar Team has some of the most stringent criteria in all of college athletics, with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50 required. Watkins, junior, boasted the highest cumulative GPA of the group at 3.91, majoring in accountancy. Fellow junior Wilcoxson had a 3.64 in exercise science, while the sophomore Champion boasts a 3.87 in criminal justice.
Both Champion and Watkins were also recently named Mid-American Conference Scholar Athletes, in addition to Academic All-MAC honorees.
